If you don't fully accept the concept that every body is different and embrace your own uniqueness, you may be at risk for developing an eating disorder. Anorexia nervosa, binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa can be life-threatening. Self-starvation, excessive weight loss, self-induced vomiting or distorted body images characterize eating disorders…but while eating disorders may begin with preoccupations with food and weight, they are most often about much more than food. They arise from a variety of physical, emotional, social, and familial issues, all of which need to be addressed for effective prevention and treatment. Another important factor is the media. Images of skinny girls and women create unrealistic cultural definitions of beauty and attractiveness. They contribute to the rise of eating disorders. The most effective and long-lasting treatment for the 10 million-plus sufferers of eating disorders is some form of psychotherapy or counseling, plus careful attention to medical and nutritional needs.
