Romanian prime minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu meets with his Italian counterpart Romano Prodi and Pope Benedict in Rome. Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu met with his Italian counterpart Romano Prodi on Wednesday (November 7) to discuss the Italian government's recent emergency legislation allowing local authorities to expel European Union citizens they consider to be dangerous. The measures, prompted by public anger at a series of crimes blamed on poor Romanian immigrants, have sparked diplomatic tensions with Bucharest. Before the meeting with Prodi, Tariceanu met with Pope Benedict at the Vatican after the weekly general audience. The Vatican recently called for an end to prejudice against Roma and during his Angelus on Sunday (November 4) the Pontiff expressed his hopes that relations between migrants and Italians be marked by "the spirit of high moral civility".
