A surgical team at Salt lake City's children's medical centre are preparing to separate conjoined twins on Monday (August 7). Doctors held meetings last week to plan the separation of four year olds Kendra and Maliyah Herrin, who are joined from the waist down. The twins parents were anxious ahead of the operation but remained hopeful. "We're confident in the surgeons and that they'll do a good job. And we're looking forward to getting through this just as fast as possible," Jake Herrin, the twins father said. The operation could last as long as 30 hours and will attempt to divide the girls' kidney and large intestine. Doctors will also rebuild their abdomen using muscles from their legs as well as synthetic tissue. Kendra will get the girls' shared liver, while Maliyah will be put on dialysis until she can receive a transplant from her mother.
