As part of the first public viewing of an exhibition of original paintings commissioned to illustrate the labels of vintage wines from the Chateau Mouton Rothschild label, a watercolor by The Prince of Wales is unveiled at Sotheby's - New York. The exhibition also includes works by artists like Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso. Vintage wines from Chateau Mouton Rothschild, a legendary wine label from the north of Bordeaux, and paintings commissioned to illustrate their labels took center-stage at Sotheby's New York on Friday (February 23). The exhibition opened with an unveiling of a watercolor by The Prince of Wales which was commissioned as an illustration for the 2004 label of a Chateau Mouton Rothschild vintage. The painting marks the Centenary of the Entente Cordiale, concluded by Britain and France on April 8, 1904. The Sotheby's exhibition also included other paintings commissioned to illustrate the labels of other vintages from Chateau Mouton Rothschild. The tradition of having artists illustrate bottle labels with original works started in 1945 with then owner Baron Philippe and now his daughter Baroness Philippine de Rothschild is continuing with the practice. Serena Sutcliffe, the Head of Sotheby's Wine Department said that the idea of having different artists illustrate labels was a very original initiative by the Mouton label. "I think one of the really individual things about Mouton of course is this whole original idea that was the idea that Baron Philippe, the father of Baroness Philippine to ask a different artist each year with the new wine to do a new label. It was a brilliant idea that no one else had had and it really took off," said Sutcliffe. Amidst other vintage labels on display were illustrations by Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Joan Miro and Marc Chagall. In conjunction with the exhibition, there will be a special auction of wines, "Treasures from the Private Cellar of Baroness Philippine." The single-owner evening sale will take place on February 28, will include 206 lots and is expected to bring up to an estimated 885,000 U.S. dollars.
