Rescue crews on Monday (May 7) began a third sweep through piles of debris where homes and businesses once stood in Greensburg, Kansas. The storm left eight dead in the tiny farming community of Greensburg and one dead in nearby Pratt County. At least 50 people were injured, some critically. A tenth person died and three people were injured on Saturday night when another tornado touched down in southwest Kansas not far from Greensburg. The residents of the community who had fled the tornado which struck on Friday (May 4) were preparing to return to their homes on Monday. Some 90 percent of the businesses and homes in Greensburg, a town of about 1,800, were damaged or destroyed when the mile-wide tornado and winds of 165 mph (265 kph) ripped through the area. Tornadoes also touched down in Oklahoma on Friday. Storm chasers caught one twister in Ellis County, Oklahoma on tape as it ripped through the county kicking up dirt and debris. The spring storms continue in Oklahoma Monday, where much of the state is at risk for thunderstorms. The weekend storm system brought heavy rains and flash flooding to Oklahoma City, cutting power to nearly 75-hundred families Monday morning.
