Fred Mogaka of Kenya ran past countryman Moses Kororia in the closing mile to claim victory in the Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday (March 4). Mogaka finished with a time of 2 hours, 17 minutes and 14 seconds-just 49 seconds ahead of the top women's finisher, Ramilia Burangolova, whose time was 2:17.53. Event organisers started the women twenty minutes ahead of the men in an attempt to have the top men and women finish at the same time but Mogaka and Kororia as well as third place finisher Christopher Kipyego raced past Burangolova in the closing miles. Mogaka and Burangolova earned US$100,000 for winning while Mogaka claimed an extra US$20,000 and a new car for beating Burangolova. Defending champions Benson Cherono of Kenya and Russian Lidiya Grigoryeva were absent from this years race.
