Thousands of people in the US celebrated Columbus Day on Thursday (October 9), an event organisers claim is the largest celebration of Italian-American heritage in the world. The 62nd Columbus Day parade in New York city saw the streets of Manhattan lined with crowds enjoying good autumn weather. Italian Americans and those who were Italian just for the day lined both sides of Fifth Avenue for more than 30 city blocks. Some had flags with the red, green and white of Italy, while others carried signs. In Chicago there were marching bands and colourful floats. Christopher Columbus' arrival in the new world in 1492 has been honored as a holiday in the United States since 1937. Some people even dressed like Columbus for the big ceremony.
