Cameron Diaz and Toni Colette on Monday (November 7) walked the red carpet to hundreds of screaming fans for the UK premiere of their latest movie "In Her Shoes" - a film about learning to accept your past, forgive your family, and love yourself. The movie had a poor box office opening in the U.S. but director Curtis Hanson said that was because people couldn't shoebox it. "I'm thrilled with the critical reaction and the attention the actors have gotten. I'm a little disappointed that the box office wasn't enormous on its opening but it's holding up really well. You know part of the reason that we wanted to do this movie is it's a little bit hard to identify which is what people keep talking about the chick flick aspect, everyone wants to put a label on it because that makes it easy and this is more of a people's story , it's about characters and emotions and so forth." Maggie (Cameron Diaz) and Rose Feller (Toni Collette) are sisters who share nothing in common but the same 8-and-a-half size feet. They are polar opposites when it comes to values, goals and personal style. But in reality, the women are two sides of the same coin: Each feels lonely and isolated due a completely different set of issues related to her respective insecurities. Maggie is a party girl who barely graduated from high school and can't seem to keep a job. Since she is unemployed much of the time, she bounces between friends and relatives, sleeping on whatever couch is available. With no confidence in her intellectual ability, she believes her biggest asset is her attractiveness to the opposite sex and prizes her cosmetic bag above all else. In contrast, Rose is a Princeton-educated attorney at a top law firm whose work is her life. She struggles with her weight, and possesses a low sense of self-esteem. And, her beautifully decorated apartment serves as a refuge from the outside world. Her one joy in life is her shoes, though she rarely removes them from her closet due to a pronounced lack of social occasions. A blow-up between the two sisters finally sets them on a path of self-discovery that causes each to eventually develop a true appreciation for one another. The journey also leads the two to an unexpected find: The existence of a grandmother (Shirley MacClaine) they thought was dead. And, through the process of reconnecting with her, they also learn how to make peace with each other. Diaz and Colette who appeared inseparable as they walked the red carpet said they had a great time working together : "We had a great time, we played sisters, but it wasn't a stretch for us to sort of find our way with compatibility as individuals, I love Toni, she's an angel and a light and I love being next to her." Both actresses have siblings in real life but they said whilst they could draw on that experience for their character interpretation, the movie was mostly about human relationships: "I have brothers and I think the fact I don't have a sister it really shows that in terms of relating to the movie it's not just a sisterly, female thing, it's more about human beings in general and the changes that they go through." said Colette. "And everyone has family, even if you don't have a brother or sister, siblings you still come from somewhere and those relationships are really important." added Diaz. "In Her Shoes" opens in the UK on November 11.
