Sixteen Korean and Indonesian sailors are missing after two cargo ships collided early Tuesday (March 10) off the coast of Japan. One of the vessels, the Korean-registered 4,255-tonne "Orchid Pia," apparently sunk with its 16 crew members - seven South Koreans and nine Indonesians. They are still missing after more than 10 hours follwing the collision, which occurred shortly past 2 a.m. in the Pacific Ocean about 120 kilometres south of Tokyo, according to the Japan Coast Guard. The other vessel, 10,833-tonne Panamanian-flag "CYGNUS ACE," managed to stay afloat after suffering damage to its bow, and none of its 11 crew members were injured. The missing vessel was heading for South Korea after leaving a Japanese port carrying steel coil. The Cygnus Ace was shuttling between Japanese ports with 112 cars on board, local media said. The Japan Coast Guard says that visibility in the area was poor because of bad weather around the time of the accident.
