The magazine Foreign Policy released its list of top 100 public intellectuals and thinkers who are shaping the tenor of our time. Among the names on the list is Turkish scholar Fethullah Gulen. The magazine which prescribed the criteria such that candidates must be living and still active in public life, and must have shown distinction in their particular field as well as an ability to influence wider debate, often far beyond the borders of their own country, will ask its readers to vote for list of the top 20 Public Intellectuals. Fethullah Gulen, who is described as a modernist Islamic scholar and leader of the educational volunteering movement and outstanding figure of interfaith dialog studies authoring more than 60 books, was included in the top 100. Among the famous names in the top 100 public intellectuals list are a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, former vice US president Al Gore, historian Bernard Lewis, three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Thomas Friedman of the New York Times, Political scientist Francis Fukuyama, Linguist and activist Noam Chomsky. Foreign Policy and Britain's Prospect magazine selected their top 100, and invited readers to vote for their top 20. The editors detailed the criteria that they used: Although the men and women on this list are some of the world's most sophisticated thinkers, the criteria to make the list could not be simpler. Candidates must be living and still active in public life. They must have shown distinction in their particular field as well as an ability to influence wider debate, often far beyond the borders of their own country. Two thirds of the list is comprised of the US and European intellectuals. The Middle East including Turkiye have 11 on the list. To join the voting you have to access the website through foriegnpolicy.com and click on the five names and submit your choice. EBRU NEWS 02 May 2008
