It is the end of an era at Waterloo, as the last Eurostar leaves the station. But as another era at St Pancras begins, the move is marred by an angry row. The five Eurostar platforms at Waterloo - the country's busiest station - will be mothballed at a cost of half a million pounds a year to the taxpayer. Network Rail say one platform will be operational by the end of 2008 - but in the meantime commuters living with the hell of Waterloo will get no respite. South West Trains say the job to adapt the platforms is just too great, despite having 2 years to plan for the move.
