The Wimbledon Centre Court Roof

A few details about the new Centre Court roof: SIZE: 5,200 square meters. WEIGHT: 1,000 tons. MAKEUP: moving steel trusses sustaining a translucent waterproof fabric. CONSTRUCTION TIME: Three years. COST: Unknown, but estimated by British newspapers at 100 million pounds, or $165 million. CLOSING TIME: Between eight and 10 minutes, with "a further 20-30 minutes for the air management system to create the correct conditions," according to the Centre Court Roof brochure. First Wimbledon match to be played under the roof was the 4th round match between Scotland's Andy Murray and Stanislas Wawrinka on June 29, 2009. Murray won 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 and the match came in at just three minutes short of four hours.
