The Historical Ghan Railway and Algebuckina bridge, South Australia

This Glenn Ridge outback story, focuses on the historical Ghan Railway and Algebuckina Bridge, in South Australia. It is the story of a great remnant of the old railway which was built across outback Australia. The Old Ghan Railway was completed in 1929 and was the link between Alice Springs and Adelaide. It was built in rough country that either blistered in the sun or was inundated with floods from the rains. Train tracks were rough, so speeds were normally only at a crawl. Most of the bridges have been washed away, but the Algebuckina bridge has lasted the test of time, it stretches 578 metres in south Australia and was built over the Neill's river.
