Snubbed by the elitist New York society for their "new money" status, the mothers of beautiful young women plot their entrée into higher social circles. After a failed attempt to attend the Paramore ball as the sisters of Lord Richard--an English aristocrat and fiancée of their friend Conchita--Nan, Virginia and Lizzy are further ostracized by the New York set. Laura, Nan's new English Governess, recommends introduction into English society as a way to ease the women’s acceptance into upper society back at home. Lord Richard's family reluctantly accepts Conchita, their son’s new “exotic” wife, and her young American friends. Nan has a memorable encounter with an ambitious but poverty-stricken Englishmen.
