The Auto Industry – The Motor of the German Economy is Sputtering

Germany's car industry is in crisis: in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen has let temp workers go; BMW has halted production lines in Munich; Daimler in Stuttgart is forcing its staff to take a vacation, and in Rüsselsheim Opel has asked Chancellor Angela Merkel for financial assistance. Calls for government aid to help automakers develop more fuel-efficient cars are growing. At the moment, most auto industry executives aren't even willing to wager a guess what the year 2009 will bring.
