Free Teddy Afro Now In 2001, Teddy released his debut album, Abugida, named after the Abugida syllabary of the Ge'ez language. Several tracks quickly caught the ear of many listeners in Ethiopia - Halieselassie, a tribute to the late Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie I; Haile, Haile, a single in honor of the Olympic long distance champion Haile Gebrselassie; and Mona Lisa, a song about the measure of human beauty. His second album, Yasteseryal, was released in 2005. The release of this album coincided with elevated political tension in Ethiopia surrounding the Ethiopian general election, 2005. His politically and socially inspired songs vibrated a call for unity and peace. However, some of his songs were not welcomed by the supporters of the government. In Prison Teddy Afro was accused of being involved in a fatal car accident, and was imprisoned at Kality prision in Addis pending his trial. Teddy has pleaded not guilty to these allegations, and his court case and imprisonment has been a national talking point in Ethiopia. Due to revelations of new evidence, the case against Teddy Afro appears to be collapsing. The incident date of the alleged lethal car accident and the actual date of the death of the victim, whom Teddy Afro allegedly killed in the accident are found to be contradicting. According to the prosecutor, Teddy was involved on October 23, in a hit and run accident, killing a homeless man by the name of Ato Degu Yibeltal. To the contrary, according to the hospital record, Ato Degu had died a day earlier, on October 22, with the autopsy performed on the alleged accident date of October 23.On Friday, July 4, Teddy Afro's lawyer requested the court for the dismissal of the case in light of this new revelation. The judge ordered further investigation and sent Teddy Afro back to prison again.
