Armed Tamil Tiger Terrorist launched an attack on Sri Lankan military helicopters on Tuesday. The choppers carrying six foreign envoys suffered damage and reported injuries. The Sri Lankan government is calling the firing deliberate and says the U.S. and Italian ambassadors were slightly wounded, and seven Sri Lankan security personnel were injured during the attack. Luckily, envoys from Canada, France, Germany and Japan managed to escape without injuries. An AP report quotes German Ambassador Juergen Weerth upon returning to Colombo, the capital as saying, "We were extremely lucky to be able to escape. I could see the grenades or something like that falling and exploding." The group was heading to the city of Batticaloa to check on a humanitarian development project,when the attack took place. According to military officials the choppers had just touched down at a playground, when shells began raining down from the sky. Immediately the group took to the ground or began running.Sri Lankan press officer, Lal Sarath Kumara says, "Everyone ran in various directions." He continues by saying, "There was huge chaos there, and all the people were in fear. People were screaming and running." "This attack has been deliberately leveled against the foreign diplomats who were undertaking a humanitarian mission," Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said while visiting China. (more)
