Flood levels in Swiss border town of Basel and elsewhere are receding, say local authorities, but some footpaths and bridges along the the Rhine River are still awash. Water levels receded in the Swiss town of Basel on the border with France and Germany on Friday (August 10), authorities and local residents said. Switzerland's worst floods in two years meant cities along the Rhine suffered from flooding after two days of torrential rain across northern Switzerland swelled the river and its tributaries to dangerous levels, officials said. Basel was forced to raise the alarm on Thursday (August 9) as the Rhine threatened to burst its banks. Police and rescue workers evacuated homes in particularly high risk areas. Water still covered some foot paths and bridges across the river on Friday, and access to the river prevented in places.
