Jin Jing lost her right leg to knee cancer in 1989. She recovered and became a member of the Shanghai Wheelchair Fencing Team. She won a silver and a bronze in the 2002 Busan Far East and South Pacific Games. On April 7, 2008, Jin Jing was the third torchbearer of the Olympic torch relay's Paris leg. She was nicknamed the "Smiling Angel in Wheelchair" by netizens after instinctively protecting the torch from repeated assaults by Tibetan separatists. After the incident, Jin Jing spoke out against a boycott of the French hypermarket chain Carrefour, causing some controversy. She added, "We Chinese people will certainly welcome French people and athletes to China with a tolerant, friendly and passionate attitude."
