A spectacular procession snaked through the streets of Madrid on Friday in celebration of the Three Kings (Three Wise Men) who traditionally bring presents to the Spanish children. Christmas lasts until the 6th of January in Spain: the Twelfth day of Christmas or Epiphany. Until quite recently this was the day that gifts were exchanged; nowadays Santa Claus has become involved and also brings presents on the 25th of December. In Madrid, as in many towns and cities throughout the country, children line the streets on the evening of January the 5th to welcome the Three Kings (or Three Wise Men) - Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar - who brought gifts of gold, incense and myrrh to the infant Jesus. Nowadays they bring toys, dolls and presents for parents which are left in thousands of homes in the dead of night. Six hundred participants and 32 floats paraded through Central Madrid in this years cavalcade.
