SOUTH AFRICA: SURFING - 71 surfers in Cape Town break World Record for most surfers riding one wave simultaneously

71 local surfers in Cape Town exceed the official Guinness World Record for the most surfers riding one wave simultaneously. The Earthwave Global Surf Challenge in Muizenberg near Cape Town exceeded the official Guinness World Record for the most surfers riding one wave simultaneously by getting 71 surfers up and riding for a minimum of five seconds. The event also aimed to raise awareness on Global Warming. Earthwave is the first surfing event to be staged world-wide when seven nations, spanning the planet from Australia in the east to Tahiti in the west, stage events that will showcase the world-wide nature of the surfing community and raise awareness on Global Warming and possibly the first sporting event of any kind to be run this way. Founded by the Kahuna Surfing Academy based in Cape Town, South Africa, the Earthwave Global Surf Challenge utilises the publicity and crowd-pulling attraction of attempts on the Guinness World Record for the most surfers to ride one wave simultaneously as a platform to issue a call to action on how to combat the climate crisis. "We hunt the ocean for waves. We run around our coastlines and that's what the whole thing is, Global Warming and climate change. Look after our conditions. Look after our Global Warming aspects. Look after our coastline. Create more awareness for what is actually going on. Make more surf spots available for the rest of our kids out there," said Dene Botha, Kuhuna Surfing Academy co-ordinator. Inspired by Al Gore's film An Inconvenient Truth and loosely based on the efforts of similar initiatives by organisations such as Live Earth, Earthwatch, Earth Day, Earthdance and Earth Hour, the interest in Earthwave will be used to highlight the problems of Global Warming and to issue a call to action on what can be done to reduce climate change and specifically its effects on our oceans and waves.
