Somali government claims victory over rebels

The Somali government claims to have retaken control of Mogadishu after a nine day offensive to root out insurgents. Ethiopian soldiers have been fighting alongside Somali troops, against Muslim rebels and militant members of one Somali clan. The government admitted there were still pockets of resistance, especially in the north of the capital. Christian Ethiopia is said to have the tacit approval of the United States for its involvement in the battle against the Muslims in Somalia. The transitional government in Mogadishu was installed in 2004 but lacks popular support. Last year the Islamists tested its authority by setting up Sharia courts and calling for a holy war against the Addis Abbaba regime. Hundreds of civilians are reported to have been killed in the offensive. Aid supplies are being held up. A third of a million people have fled the capital
