Parts of Britain have been hit by heavy snow with motorists struggling in hazardous driving conditions. Worst affected were Scotland and northern England, while northern Ireland and Wales also saw snowfall. Temperatures are set to rise slightly with rain and wind forecast for much of the rest of Britain. The overnight freeze was caused by a weather system of precipitation moving in from the west and turning to snow as it met the cold air. Forecaster Rachel Vince said: "As this rain moves in it is bringing in some milder air. In most places the snow will turn to rain. "Only the hills of northern England and eastern parts of Scotland will see much snow lying on the ground. Elsewhere, rain will have washed the snow away." Meanwhile, the expected snow covering has led bookmakers to slash the odds on a white Christmas. Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg said: "We're frozen with fear at the prospect of a white Christmas. Interest in the traditional festive wager has gone into overdrive this year." Glasgow is 2/1 to see snow, from an opening quote of 8/1. Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester are at 4/1.
