Slumdog Millionaire leads the way at the Bafta nominations
Double Golden Globe winner Kate Winslet has been nominated for two Bafta awards. The 33-year-old is nominated as Best Actress for her role as a former concentration camp guard in The Reader. She is also up for Best Actress for her dramatic role for Revolutionary Road, which saw her reunited with her Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. She is up against Angelina Jolie in Changeling, Kristin Scott Thomas in I've Loved You So Long and Meryl Streep in Doubt. Newcomer Dev Patel is up for Best Actor for his role in Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, taking the film's total to 11 nominations. Other nominees in the category include Sean Penn for his role in Milk, Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frank Langella in Frost/Nixon and Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler. Rounding out the Best Film category are Slumdog Millionaire, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, The Reader and Milk. Danny Boyle is up for Best Director for Slumdog Millionaire, Clint Eastwood for Changeling, David Fincher for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Ron Howard for Frost/Nixon and Stephen Daldry for The Reader. Jonathan Ross will present the Orange British Academy Film Awards ceremony next month, a fortnight after the BBC lifts his suspension over the Andrew Sachs lewd phone calls row. The British film industry is already riding high after Kate Winslet and Slumdog Millionaire made it a night to remember for the British film community at the Golden Globes earlier this week. Winslet scooped two awards during a night that also saw success for fellow British actress Sally Hawkins for her role in Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky. Slumdog Millionaire, the story of how impoverished Indian teen Jamal Malik became a contestant on the Hindi version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire proved the biggest winner, taking home four trophies including best dramatic film. The movie also went down a storm at the recent Critics' Choice Awards.
