Six UN staff killed in Kabul attack

Six UN staff were killed when Taliban militants attacked an international guest house in Kabul while a rocket was fired at a foreign-owned hotel in the Afghan capital, forcing 100 guests into an underground bunker. An increasingly resurgent Taliban have vowed to stage attacks ahead of a run-off in Afghanistan's presidential election on November 7 and the apparently co-ordinated assault will raise questions about security for the vote. Afghan forces were exchanging gunfire with militants inside the guest house, police said. The Taliban also claimed responsibility for taking hostages. Eight US troops were killed in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday, the Nato-led alliance said, in the deadliest month for US forces since the start of the war eight years ago. The news comes ahead of President Obama's meeting with military chiefs to decide whether to send more troops to the country. The New York Times has also reported that the brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai had been getting regular payments from the Central Intelligence Agency and was a suspected player in Afghanistan's opium trade. Ahmed Wali Karzai was quoted as denying the report and the CIA neither confirmed nor denied the reported payments.
