Shawn Johnson of United States wins the Beam title in Beijing Olympics 2008

Shawn Johnson of the United States won the gold medal in the Beam event at the Olympic Gymnastics tournament here on Tuesday.Shawn Johnson of the United States won the gold medal in the Beam event at the Olympic Gymnastics tournament here on Tuesday. Shawn Johnson collected 16.225 points for the title, edging her fellow American Nastia Liukin to the second place at 16.025. Cheng Fei of China settled for the bronze medal at 15.950.However, tonight was a different story for Johnson. Li Shanshan of China, a heavy gold medal favorite and top-ranked qualifier, fell down from the beam and her medal chances nosedived sharply. Another Chinese gymnast Cheng Fei, who competed first and scored 15.950, had no chance of winning gold because of instability during her routine. Even Liukin, who has been so perfect during the Games, walked a small step forward when dismounting, which was a tiny mistake that probably cost her gold. Anna Pavlova of Russia finished fourth with 15.900, followed by Gabriela Dragoi of Romania with 15.625. Li came sixth with 15.300.U.S. gymnasts Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin finished 1-2 in the balance beam event in individual event finals Tuesday night, giving the U.S. women eight medals overall in Beijing. That ties them with the 1984 team in los Angeles for the best ever by U.S. girls in an Olympic Games. Johnson won her first gold with a score of 16.225, while Liukin took second at 16.025. Johnson's gold was the second ever in the event by an American. Shannon Miller also did it in 1996 in Atlanta. the double was also the first time the U.s. won two medals in the event Liukin's silver gives her five medals for the Beijing Olympics (one gold, three silvers and a bronze), tying her with Miller and Marylou Retton for the most in one Games. Johnson has won four medals. The bronze medal was won by China's Cheng Fei with a score of 15.950. Update: The USA's Jonathan Horton won the sliver medal in the men's high bar individual event Tuesday night. Horton scored a 16.175, only .0025 behind the 16.200 of Zou Kai of China, who won the gold. The U.S. gymnastics team (both men and women) won a total of 10 medals in this Olympics, (two gold, six silver, two bronze), the fourth best medal haul by a U.S. team in an Olympics and the best at a Games outside of the U.S.
