Senior Islamic Jihad Commander Planning Suicide Bombing In Israel Killed In IDF Operation Near Tulkarm

A senior Islamic Jihad commander planning a suicide bomb attack in Israel, was shot and killed early Wednesday by Israeli security forces operating in the village Saida outside Tulkarm in the West Bank. IDF sources told Infolive.tv that IDF, Border Police and Shin Bet officials entered the village on Tuesday night to arrest Salah Karkur and surrounded his house, calling on him to surrender. Karkur opened fire at the forces and threw explosive devices at them, the soldiers returned fire and identified hitting him. After attempts to coax him outside proved unsuccessful a bulldozer began demolishing the house. A Kalashnikov rifle and several explosive devices were discovered near Karkur's body. According to the army, in recent weeks Karkur planned along with other operatives a suicide bombing in Israel. In 1998, Karkur was questioned and arrested for the first time for his involvement in the Islamic Jihad terror organization. In 1999 he returned to terror activities right after his release. In January 25, 2002, Karkoor was arrested following a suicide bombing in Tel- Aviv in which 23 civilians were injured. He confessed to having accommodated the two bombers at his house, and to his involvement in terror activity and the recruiting of suicide bombers. He was sentenced and served time in jail before he was released in November 2006. He took part in the establishment of an Islamic Jihad cell, together with Haled Hassin, who was killed by a special IDF force on October 23, 2007, along with a number of Islamic Jihad terror operatives from Tul-Karem who operated in Jenin in 2007. Karkur's cell was responsible for executing the suicide bombing at an IDF roadblock near the community of Einav on July 12, 2007. 03/12/08
