Phil Wyman is the former Assemblyman and State Senator (Republican)for Barstow and the greater Mojave Desert. His own family has ties with the Chemehuevi that goes back for generations. He has a passion for protecting the Native American Ancestral Rights and is working hard to help restore Native American culture and language. He now serves as Legislative Consultant for the Chemehuevi Tribe. On May 10,2008, Chemehuevi Chairman Charles F. Wood was one of the featured speakers at the Native American Festival and Dedication of the mural which was the outcome of a special six month program for children in Barstow, California. The program was called the "Native American Voices From The Mojave Desert" and offered the children an opportunity to study the lifestyle of the Tribes from that region. There are four tribes that are recognized by the Native American Heritage Foundation as having Ancestral Rights in the Mojave Desert: the Kawaiisu, the Mojave, the Serrano, and the Chemehuevi Tribe. The Chemehuevi Tribe are attempting to have a casino in Barstow as a means to preserve culture, history and raise the standard of living for their Tribe. Unfortunately, the local Republican cronies, the Republican leaders in the State Assemblyman Bill Maze, the State Senate Roy Ashburn, County Supervisor (formerly Bill Postmus and now) Brad Mitzlefelt, and the 25th Congressman Buck McKeon, and have all joined in the campaign to violate the Ancestral Rights of the local Tribes in favor of the Big Lagoon Tribe 600 miles away and the Los Coyotes Tribe of San Diego County. This joint "Off Reservation" project is the doing of a greedy Right-Wing Detroit Developer Barwest who has made a deal with Governor Schwarzenegger. Barwest has now bought up all of the local "crony" Republicans and have put their puppets on the City Council.
