Martz orchestrated the popular St Louis Rams offense during his successful tenure with the team. He also ran the offense with the Detroit Lions in 2007. San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan announced there will be a 3-way battle for his starting quarterback position as training camp opens in late July. Alex Smith was the teams number-1 draft pick in 2005 but had a poor 2007 season that led to a rift with his head coach. Smith played in 7 games during an injury-riddled 2007 season, passing for only 2 touchdowns and only averaging 130 yards passing per game. Backup Shaun Hill appeared in 3 games last season and led the 49’ers to 2 victories in December. Hill completed 68-percent of his passes while throwing for 5 TD’s and only 1 interception. J.T. O’Sullivan was brought over from Detroit as he served as a backup last season. O’Sullivan is the only quarterback on the roster with experience under Mike Martz’ system.
