Hundreds of couples and singles gathered at Palace Square in St. Petersburg on Saturday (September 8), to take part in a mass kissing event. The event organised by a young St. Petersburg resident Kirill Mitrofanov was not aimed at setting or breaking any kind of kissing record. Mitrofanov said he dreamed up the idea to help young singles find partners, and to show there is always a chance to be happy and simply to have fun. Single participants were asked to come an hour before the actual kissing event, with a badge in the form of a heart, to signal the wearer's readiness to begin a new relationship. Some carried red heart-shaped balloons. Singles were told to ask coded questions when trying to find a willing partner such as "Do you know the way to the library?", meaning "I would like to meet you on a more intimate basis today, with a view to possibly building a serious relationship in the future. If the person answered "The library at 3.00 in the morning?" it meant, "Leave me along, you are not my type", but if the answer was "Let me show you the way" then the response signalled a more positive reaction. "It is interesting to kiss someone who you do not really know, new blood, new people, new feelings," said Denis, one young man who turned up to the event. And Mitrofanov was pleased with how things went. "I think these kind of events unite people and some may start good and serious relationships after this event, look how many people have gathered," he said.
