Rome's mayor declared a state of emergency after severe storms lashed the city. Hundreds of people living near the Tiber are being evacuated. The area around the historic Ponte Milvio pedestrian bridge across the river has been sealed off. Almost all of Italy has been suffering bad weather in recent days, with heavy snowfall blanketing the north and strong winds and downpours pelting the south. Parts of the historic centre of Venice are once again under water. Earlier this month, Italy's lagoon city suffered its worst flooding for more than two decades.
