Road Safty: cross-boarder enforcement

+++THIS VIDEO ORIGINATED FROM THE EUROPA AUDIO/VISUAL SERVICE WEBSITE+++ On 19/03/2008, the European Commission adopts a proposed directive which will put in place a new system for cross-border enforcement of the highway code Its goal is to harmonise both technical mechanisms and legal instruments which would allow a European driver to be pursued and penalized for a driving offence committed in another Member State. These measures will improve road safety and bring about a positive change to the driving habits of both foreign drivers and Member State residents and put an end to the different ways of dealing with these two categories of road users. The proposed directive covers four types of Highway Code infringements: speeding, driving while under the influence of alcohol, not wearing a seat belt and running a red light. To illustrate this important directive, the European Commission's audiovisual service is producing an infoclip which will illustrate: - policemen on motorbikes stopping a speeding motorist - policman carrying out alcohol level tests - various European vehicle number plates - driver putting on his seat belt - driver going through a traffic light changing from amber to red - automatic radar - speed limit panels - luminous speed control signs - speedometre showing authorised speed limit has been exceeded - traffic police office where driving offence paperwork is dealt with.
