The cast of Rendition have wowed fans at the Rome Film Festival.Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon were promoting their new political drama, which tells the story of a man arrested as a terror suspect.Speaking at a news conference, Gyllenhaal said the film shows torture is wrong, but it could also open it up to debate."It says that torture is wrong. I think you can see in the film that it does not work," he said."But I also think it presents the political side of it too, which is saying that you could be torturing one innocent man, but at the same time 5,000 people are alive ... because of information that the government elicited through (extraordinary) rendition."The film, starring Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep, questions the practice of transferring terrorism suspects to other countries where their interrogators could abuse or torture them.Gyllenhaal plays a CIA analyst who comes to question his government's sanctioning of the practice.Director Gavin Hood, whose South African drama Tsotsi won the 2005 foreign-language Oscar, said he hoped the film would spark debate about the rules that US anti-terror officials use to try to protect its citizens.© Independent Television News Limited 2007.
