RELIGION: Pope Benedict tries to quell row over his comments about the Prophet Mohammed

Expressing regret that his comments had offended Muslims - Pope Benedict has tried to quell the growing anger at his remarks about the Prophet Mohammed. But he stopped short of a full apology about the content of his lecture - where he quoted an early Christian view that Islam was spread by violence. And Muslim protests have continued - on the streets - and diplomatically - raising questions about whether the Pope's planned visit to Turkey can go ahead.
