RAPEX: alert for dangerous products
RAPEX (Rapid Alert System Report), a European alert system, was established by the European Commission to highlight products which could cause an important risk to health and consumer security. Ensuring that products are safe is one of the main preoccupations of consumers and this is shown by the increasing participation of Member States in the RAPEX programme. The 2006 Report also highlighted the fact that toys, especially those manufactured in China, are an increasing source of potentially dangerous products. The priority actions are, among others, the following: strengthening market surveillance systems and the rapid alert system in the EU in order to draw attention to dangerous products, reinforcing cooperation with the American and Chinese authorities, collecting information on accidents and injuries linked to products or services as well as on chemical risks and the analysis of such risks. On 19/04/2007, Meglena Kuneva, Member of the EC in charge of Consumer Protection, will present the 2006 annual report on potentially dangerous products which have been withdrawn from the European market. To illustrate this, the European Commission's Audiovisual Service is preparing an infoclip which will illustrate the following: - products withdrawn from the market and considered potentially dangerous - presentation of products by Stefano Soro, head of the unit "Products and Services Security" at the Directorate General "Health and Consumer Protection" of the EC.
