A strong earthquake shook Southern California just before noon Tuesday. [Notes:aptn: workers]Tall buildings swayed for several seconds-- prompting some workers to quickly evacuate from buildings as a pre-caution. [Notes:aptn sound] 15:19:50SOT: I WORK ON THE 5TH FLOOR. THIS WAS THE WORST I'VE EVER FELT. IT JUST KEPT GOING AND GOING [Notes:animation: caltech]The U-S Geological Survey said the 5-point-4 magnitude quake was centered 29 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles-- near Chino Hills in San Bernardino County. It's estimated that the quake was about 8 miles below the earth's surface. [Notes:pool: seismologist] 15:45:34SOT: we know the motion was thrust, in other words the quake occurred on a fault where one side was thrust up over the other side during the earthquake. And we know it was widely felt dr. Kate Hutton/seismologist Minutes after earthquake, more than a dozen aftershocks hit. The jolt was felt from Los Angeles to San Diego, in Las Vegas and across the border in Tijuana, Mexico. [Notes:pool: gov]SOT: "I thank God there have not been any reports of serious injuries or damage to properties," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told a televised press conference. "People understandably are very nervous." California is one of the world's most seismically active regions.
