This Video is our visit with Mrs. Grissop, a music expert, published gospel singer, and parent to Javon!Experiences in a Project Approach PromoteBefore, During, and After Reading ComprehensionWhen reading aloud to four and young five year olds, much of the activity is talking before, during, and after reading of a book. The length of time for in-depth conversations is about 15-20 minutes for a book. The artifacts I have documented are elements of the Music Project implemented from the middle of January and ended in March 2008. The three phases of learning within the project approach method are very similar to the reading comprehension strategies adhered by Stephanie Harveys Strategies That Work: Teaching Comprehension, (2000). See Minnesota Council of Teachers of English Web site (http://www.mcte.org/fallwork/archive/harvey/resources.html) for her own notes, words, and emphasis in nonfiction comprehension involving readers connections to text (self, text, and world). She identifies 7 reading strategies: making connections, questioning, inferring, determining importance, visualizing, synthesizing, and monitoring for meaning. In the Project Approach, children constantly question and wonder about a relevant topic of interest (Phase I), retell, synthesize, and make generalizations based on information learned in experiences (Phase II), and again, reflect, retell, and show our work and products to a caring audience (Phase III). Through the Project Approach, four and five year olds are involved in comprehension activities that exemplify a much more hands-on, concrete style of these same reading applications! Experiences help a young child expand in understanding of content related concepts, language and vocabulary, and learn how to be in charge of their investigations and research at their level! We are motivating and making young experts when we combine appropriate books and purposeful conversations to the active phases of the Project Approach!
