Pregnant women in England can expect a 'minimum guarantee' of the standard of care they receive and all will be given the option of a home birth, under the government's maternity strategy launched today. From 2009, in line with a Labour manifesto commitment, expectant women will be able to choose whether to go to hospital, a midwife-led unit or stay at home - and will be guaranteed a named midwife to care for them throughout their pregnancy though there is no new money to fund it. The Royal College of Midwives said 3000 more midwives are needed to fulfil the promises.
