Police speak out over Baby P abuse case

The Metropolitan Police have promised to implement any recommendations made in their reports on the Baby P case. The toddler died in his blood-spattered cot after suffering more than 50 injuries including a a broken back and eight fractured ribs. This was despite him being on the child protection register and having been seen more than 60 times by heath and social workers during his short life. The Metropolitan Police's acting commissioner, Sir Paul Stephenson, said: "No-one could read the reports of Baby P's death and not been deeply saddened, moved and quite shocked by what has gone on here." He said a new independent serious case review is to be conducted by February and a report by the Acting Chief of the Constabulary will also be undertaken. Sir Paul said: "The recommendations from the reviews must be implemented so that London's children are properly protected." Three senior staff at Haringey Council have been suspended after an inspectors' report into the sufferings of Baby P, including Sharon Shoesmith, the director of children's services. The removal of Ms Shoesmith and both resignations come three weeks after a trial found 17-month-old Baby P died at the hands of his mother, 27, her lover, 32, and their 36-year-old lodger, Jason Owen.
