Police Chase And Takedown On Tape | 2/17/06 10PM | Carey Codd | A bank robbery suspect was taken down and arrested by BSO deputies of a car dealership in Pompano this afternoon after leading officers on a dangerous chase Friday afternoon. Deputies say Thomas Christopher Geftos, 40, robbed the Suntrust at 1409 East Atlantic Boulevard just before 5pm. After making his demands, Geftos fled from the bank in a white van, and almost immediately, police were in pursuit of him after someone called 911 with his description. The chase that ensued was dangerous, not because of high speeds but because of how congested rush hour traffic was in the street. Officers from a number of different police agencies were chasing the van on busy Federal Highway. When the driver could not escape the officers, he turned into Champion Motors at 500 West Copans Road. As he drove through the parking lot filled with Porsches and other luxury cars, he could not drive any further, taking off on foot through the cars and trees that lined the locale. He did not travel long at the car dealership before he stopped, putting up his arms to signal giving up. With Chopper 4 overhead, an officer with the Broward Sheriff’s office took a flying tackle at the man, and brought him to the ground with a series of punches. Other officers quickly gathered him up and took him into custody. It took officers less than 15 minutes to get to him, having him under arrest by 5:13pm. Inside the van deputies found a money bag with an exploded dye pack inside. They have not released how much money they found. Broward Sheriff’s Office is investigating. Geftos has a listed residence in West Palm Beach. The van had a Michigan tag.
