On 26/11/2008, Günter Verheugen, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Enterprise and Industry, will hold a press conference on a Communication on the future of the pharmaceutical sector. The same day, the European Commission will adopt legislative proposals, linked to the Communication. The Communication contains three legislative proposals: the strengthening of the EU pharmacovigilance system, provision of more information to patients, notably on prescription and improving transparency in order to avoid fraud to the social security and counterfeit medicines. In order to illustrate this, the audiovisual service has prepared an infoclip which covers the following: - patient, with a prescription and an medical insurance card, obtaining medicine in a chemist shop - chemist scanning the medicine's unique barcode to enable him to obtain the relevant information about the medicine - refusal of second scanning which shows that a medicine can only be sold once.
