Petra Convention Results In Shouting Match Between Israeli And Arab Delegates

Jordan's King Abdullah II opened a three-day annual summit on Wednesday hosting Nobel Prize laureates from around the world in the ancient Nabatean desert city of Petra. More than three dozen Nobel Prize winners attended the Petra Conference to discuss solutions to some of the world's most pressing problems, including global food and fuel shortages and price rises. Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel co-hosted the summit with Jordan's King Abdullah, who stressed the urgency to form stable democracies in the Middle East. Shimon Peres, the President of Israel and the winner of the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize, also addressed the conference and upon the conlusion of his speech Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa suddenly stood up and insisted on addressing the audience too. Peres and Moussa then engaged in a heated debate, exchanging accusations which incited the audience and drew standing ovations from the pro-Israel and pro-Arab attendants at the convention. 06/19/08
