Patrick Ewing - Georgetown Hoyas - Greatest Basketball Players

Basketball College Careers of Greatest NBA Players of All Time: Patrick Ewing Born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, Patrick Ewing came to the United States where he and his family would settle in Massachusetts. After excelling at cricket and soccer back in Jamaica, Ewing would learn to play basketball at his American high-school. In 1981, Ewing would begin playing under John Thompson at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Starring on the varsity squad as a freshman, Ewing and the Hoyas would make it all the way to the NCAA Finals where they would meet up against James Worthy, a young Michael Jordan and a North Carolina team that would slip by them by a score of 63 to 62. In Ewing’s junior year, he would lead his Hoyas to the Finals once again, this time against Hakeem Olajuwon’s University of Houston. The Hoyas would down Houston 84-75, and Ewing would take home Most Outstanding Player honors for the tournament. In his senior year, Ewing would reach the finals once again, this time as the number one ranked team in the nation. However, the unranked Villanova Wildcats team would shoot an unheard of 78.6 perfect from the field upsetting Georgetown 66-64. Ewing would graduate in 1985 after being named first team All-American in three straight years. Despite only winning the one NCAA championship game in his junior year, Ewing goes down in history as one of the elite college players after leading his team to three NCAA Finals in his four years playing at Georgetown. Because of the potential Ewing, and players like Karl Malone, would bring for an NBA team, the Draft Lottery was introduced in 1985 to prevent teams from deliberately losing games at seasons end.
