Palin hits back at media criticism of her family

John McCain's running-mate Sarah Palin has defiantly taken centre-stage at the Republican convention, flanked by her family. On stage too, the boyfriend of Palin's 17-year-old pregnant daughter, Bristol. The Palin family has been the target of much media comment since she was announced as McCain's vice-presidential candidate. But she insisted it was all irrelevant. "Here is a little news flash for those reporters and commentators, I am not going to Washington to seek their good opinion. I am going to Washington to serve the people of this great country," she told cheering supporters. Then she moved on to what could be one of the most pressing issues for any new presidential team come the end of the year. "With Russia wanting to control the vital pipeline in the caucuses, and to divide and intimidate our European allies by using energy as a weapon, we cannot leave ourselves at the mercy of foreign suppliers." Palin is the governor for Alaska. President Bush has recently renewed his call for the right to drill for oil in a north Alaskan protected reserve, citing the energy crisis as justification.
