Nuclear security

As costs linked to energy supply continue to increase, the European Union has laid out a new "energy package" which will help the EU to meet the objectives it has set on the fight against climate change and the reduction of gas and oil imports. Nuclear energy has also been looked into, notably the question of security and management of waste. Nuclear power stations at present generate about a third of the electricity consumed in Europe and over a dozen European countries plan to build nuclear power stations. The EC's audiovisual service has produced this video stockshot on nuclear security to illustrate the technical briefing on 27/11/2008 and it includes the following footage: - Chooz nuclear power station, France; - Krško nuclear power station in Slovenia; - Olkiluoto nuclear power station in Finland; - inspections of nuclear power stations; - ECURIE system; - industrial use of energy.
