Non-energy raw materials

Securing access to non-energy raw materials (metals – zinc, copper, lead; precious metals – gold, silver, platinum; rock or earth based products used in the construction industry – calcareous rock, sand, chalk; minerals – sulphur, salt, clay) is crucial for the competitiveness of the European economy. The key-sectors such as the construction, chemicals, aerospace, automobile and electronic industries need a steady supply of non-energy raw materials. However, high prices and bottlenecks in supply, caused by limited or non-existant European production, can jeopardise their competitive position, particularly for precious metals that need to be imported or recycled. A press conference on this subject will be given by Günter Verheugen, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Enterprise and Industry, on 04/11/2008. To illustrate this, the EC audiovisual service has produced this infoclip which covers: - Exterior shots of Carmeuse, a company specialising in the extraction and processing of high calcium limestone and dolomitic stone into lime and lime-related products, Moha, Belgium – production line; - Umicore, a company specialising in recycling precious metals, Hoboken, Belgium – production line.
