The New York Yankees have been given a heroes' reception as thousands of fans celebrated the team's 27th World Series' triumph. The Yankees defeated the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night, in the sixth game of the best-of-seven series to secure their first championship since 2000. Following the ticker-tape parade, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg presented each member of the team with an honorary "key to the city" at a public reception at City Hall. Receiving an enormous ovation was Hideki Matsui, whose six runs-batted-in in the final game of the series helped earn him the World Series' Most Valuable Player award - the first Japanese-born player to achieve that in the 54-year history of the accolade. Also receiving thunderous cheers were the "core four" players who have been with the Yankees since their championship years in the mid-nineties - relief pitcher Mariano Rivera, starting pitcher Andy Pettite, who returned to the Yankees in 2007 after two years with the Houston Astros, team captain Derek Jeter and catcher Jorge Posada. Rapper Jay-Z, a New York City native, joined the parade and also performed at a reception for the team at City Hall.
