New Year's eve: What's happened so far?

The New Year has already begun in New Zealand and Australia where revellers enjoyed spectacular firework displays. In Auckland, the pyrotechnic show was based on top of the city's famous 328m Sky Tower. Two hours later huge crowds gathered around Sydney Harbour Bridge for an extravaganza of fire. Around 1.5 million people watched firework simulations of lightning, thunder and rain, all linked to Aboriginal creation myths. About 120,000 shells and shooting comets exploded in the £2.4-million display launched from barges, buildings and the bridge. And Melbourne attempted to take on its larger rival Sydney with a £2.2 million sell-out "oak of love" dance party attracting 40,000 revellers dressed in white to an indoor arena. Fireworks also brought in the New Year in spectacular style in Hong Kong, with rockets being launched from skyscrapers across the city.
