NBA on NBC Intro to a regular season game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat at Staples Center Opening by Bob Costas Announcers: Bob Costas and Doug Collins Lakers' winning streak hits 15 Chicago Sun-Times, Mar 6, 2000 Now everything is going the Los Angeles Lakers' way. Glen Rice, who has been struggling recently, found his game with 23 points and a season-high 10 rebounds Sunday as the Lakers defeated the visiting Miami Heat 93-80 for their 15th consecutive victory. The Lakers are only the third team in NBA history to have two winning streaks of 15 games or longer in a season. They won 16 games in a row during December and January, and it seems likely they'll equal that mark against the lowly Los Angeles Clippers tonight. The 1946-47 Washington Capitols and the 1970-71 Milwaukee Bucks also had two winning streaks of 15 games or longer. "We just wanted to continue our dominance at home and beat the teams we're supposed to beat," said Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal, who added 17 points and 11 rebounds. Kobe Bryant contributed 15 points and Ron Harper 14 for the Lakers, who improved their league-leading record to 49-11. Alonzo Mourning led the Heat with 21 points and nine rebounds in his return from a sore left ankle, but fellow starters P.J. Brown, Tim Hardaway and Dan Majerle combined for 14 points on 6-for-16 shooting. Rice had not scored in double figures in three games, but his struggles disappeared when he scored 13 points in the first quarter to help the Lakers open a 14-point lead. "I had pretty much made my mind up that I was going to come out and be aggressive going to the hole and be aggressive with my shot," Rice said. "I'm always putting a lot of pressure on myself when I'm not playing up to my capabilities and not hitting the shots that I know I can hit."
