Michael Husted and the Zen of Field Goal Kicking. I am sure that I am not the only one who was impressed with how cool a cat Michael Husted is. The guy must have some serious inner calm. Come to think of it, this seems like a requirement for the job of professional field goal kicker. Take a second to put yourself in a situation in which he surely found himself when he was in the league: Two teams of highly trained and motivated men have spent 3 hours battling with each other on the field. Countless hours of physical, mental and tactical preparation have led up to this NFL game. The sacrifice and the passion on both sides is palpable. In a strange twist of sport the game now rests in the hands of a man of average build and speed, a man who has not been running, hitting and sweating all day- the field goal kicker. There is no gray area to the upcoming result. Either he is successful and makes the field goal or he misses the field goal and must endure the chilled stares and silence of the locker room as the elephant in the room who lost the game. And how does Michael Husted deal with perhaps the most pressure any athlete deals with in all of sports? Husted “thinks about basket weaving or maybe playing with plato. You have to check your mind at the door and let your body do what it was trained to do over all those practice sessions when the players are all cursing at you because they are sweating and you are not.” This guy is one chill dude. And not a bad teacher either. It helps, of course, when you have a student like Nathali. Did you see the way she attacked that ball. Nat goes into that field goal with some DRIVE!
